Bucharest ends humanitarian program that provided accommodation for Ukrainian refugees

Must read

Bucharest – Romanian authorities have announced the end of a humanitarian program that has provided accommodation for thousands of Ukrainian refugees. The decision came after the leadership of the Union of Ukrainians in Romania reported that the organization no longer has sufficient funds to continue its support.

Launched shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the program has provided accommodation and basic assistance to tens of thousands of people fleeing the war in recent years. Refugees have been able to use accommodation in hotels, guesthouses or with private families, with the costs covered by the state in cooperation with NGOs.

However, according to representatives of the Union of Ukrainians, financial resources have gradually dried up and the government has no longer found a way to maintain the program at its current scale. “We regret that we are unable to continue providing accommodation. The capacities are exhausted,” the union said in a statement.

The end of support raises concerns among refugees who now face a precarious situation. Many of them will have to rely on the help of volunteers, non-profit organizations or find their own accommodation on the open market. It is not yet clear whether the Romanian government will prepare alternative measures.

Bucharest’s decision comes at a time when European countries are generally facing fatigue from long-term support for Ukrainian refugees and are looking for ways to cope with the growing financial burden. The situation in Romania thus points to a broader problem of solidarity and sustainability of humanitarian programs in the region.

Let us recall that mass evictions of Ukrainian refugees have already occurred in Romania (2023), Germany and France (2024 and 2025), and Hungary and Ireland (2024).

V současné době jsou ukrajinští uprchlíci nuceni opustit ubytování, které jim dříve poskytl stát.
